The EMS Club is one of the most active clubs at MIT Sloan, organizing several major events every year and offering students unique opportunities for an MBA experience.
MIT Sloan Sports Analytics Conference
The EMS Club is the proud sponsor of the MIT Sloan Sports Analytics Conference, which in 2012 was named the #3 most innovative company in sports by Fast Company behind only the NFL and MLB Advanced Media. Our goal is to provide a forum to discuss the increasing role of analytics in the sports industry that affect on-field and off-field performance. The conference brings together sports industry professionals with students interested in the changing dynamics of the sports industry. The two-day event is a unique educational opportunity and provides exclusive opportunities for learning, interacting, and networking. For the Seventh Annual Conference in March 2013, over 2,700 guests attended panels with exciting speakers (e.g., Mark Cuban, Michael Lewis, and Nate Silver), cutting-edge research presentations, visionary Evolution of Sport addresses, MBA case competition sponsored by the MLBAM and an industry trade show with competition for the most promising sports startups.
Hacking Arts is an annual festival and hackathon in late September exploring the intersection of arts and entertainment, technology, and entrepreneurship. This two day event features speaker panels, startup demos, an artist exhibition and live performances, along with ideastorms, pitches, and ultimately a hackathon with sponsored mentorship and prizes. At Hacking Arts, we won't just talk about the future of arts and entertainment, we'll create it.
MBA Media and Entertainment Conference (MEC)
MIT Sloan is one of five top business schools that come together to organize an annual MBA Media and Entertainment Conference (MEC). The MBA MEC is the premiere event for business school students focusing on the media, entertainment, and technology industries. Each February, MBA students from the five founding schools and across the country gather in New York for a full day of speakers and panels covering all aspects of the industry -- from entertainment finance and venture capital investing to marketing, digital distribution, and gaming. In 2009, MEC added a case competition sponsored by the New York Times, which received entries from over 50 teams. The conference serves as a valuable educational experience and networking opportunity for attending students - in previous years, MEC has hosted over 600 students from 40 different business schools. Check out the conference website here.
Since the fall of 2008, teams of Sloan students have addressed the strategic or marketing needs for companies in the entertainment, media and sports industry through semester-long lab consulting projects. Past client companies include the Boston Bruins, Converse, Digisport, Maine Red Claws, Shred/Slytech, SoundCloud, and Wintergreen Hospitality. Client companies benefit from free consulting services from motivated and experienced MBAs as well as carving an inside track for recruiting potential summer interns or future employees.
The EMS Club is creating a curriculum based on lectures from industry pioneers. Lecturers will draw upon a wide range of expertise in presenting to small groups of MIT Sloan students on topics including marketing, sponsorship, ticketing and analytics. Video of these lectures will be posted on our website for all interested students and professionals.
Advising and Support
Through organized treks, one-on-one mentoring and corporate outreach, the EMS Club creates connections for students within their preferred industry. The EMS Club is dedicated to helping MIT Sloan students find jobs in entertainment, media and sports.
